Summary

I wolfed down these interlocking stories of cats, Tokyo, loneliness and redemption。 Congratulations to Nick Bradley on this vibrant and accomplished debut。, David Mitchell, via Twitter The Cat and The City is a love letter to Japan and its literature。 Bradley's passion for everything from onigiri to Tanizaki's short stories is woven into this book。 Bradley was for a time an ex-pat and his insight into their perching state is particularly intriguing。 He is also very clearly a man with a great tenderness for cats。, Rowan Hisayo Buchanan, author of HARMLESS LIKE YOU In a very impressive, finely observed debut, Nick Bradley masterfully weaves together seemingly disparate threads to conjure up a vivid tapestry of Tokyo; its glory, its shame, its characters, and a calico cat。, David Peace, author of THE TOKYO TRILOGY An inventive, clever and beguiling read。 With Tokyo as the backdrop, this is a beautifully written novel about belonging and loneliness, about escape and destruction, where the enmeshed narratives (and a magical cat) bind the city together。, Elizabeth Macneal, author of THE DOLL FACTORY Like the street cat that slinks through this, Nick Bradley is endlessly resourceful,

3。5 stars。 Beautifully written and containing some really affecting stories。 Some tales are shocking in their misogyny and violence (the comment always being that such things are bad, but they were hard for me to read and worth being aware of)。 Many of the stories are very moving and I loved the delicate theme running throughout。 Would read more by the author!

A series of interconnected stories linked by a green-eyed cat set in Tokyo。I really wanted to like this book and I enjoyed some of the stories but unfortunately for me the premise didn't really deliver。 The atmosphere tried to be both gritty and magical but just ended up being jarring。 While the author is knowledgeable about Japan the book is very much stuck in a Western male point of view and I had some issues with the portrayal of women, Japanese culture and cats。 A series of interconnected stories linked by a green-eyed cat set in Tokyo。I really wanted to like this book and I enjoyed some of the stories but unfortunately for me the premise didn't really deliver。 The atmosphere tried to be both gritty and magical but just ended up being jarring。 While the author is knowledgeable about Japan the book is very much stuck in a Western male point of view and I had some issues with the portrayal of women, Japanese culture and cats。 。。。more

I rarely read short stories but these are linked by a cat and some of the characters。 I also learnt a lot about Japanese society making them even more interesting。

This book is one long bruh moment。 There's a few interesting stories and characters - the robot cat is a fun one, and the hikikomori story incorporating a small comic is quite sweet, but most of the stories are really seedy and misogynistic with zero sense of self-awareness。 This book has a severe case of written-by-a-man disease and despite depicting a harsh and melancholy Tokyo, it still manages to romanticise it through what feels like a cringy Western lens to me。 The book has a weird obsessi This book is one long bruh moment。 There's a few interesting stories and characters - the robot cat is a fun one, and the hikikomori story incorporating a small comic is quite sweet, but most of the stories are really seedy and misogynistic with zero sense of self-awareness。 This book has a severe case of written-by-a-man disease and despite depicting a harsh and melancholy Tokyo, it still manages to romanticise it through what feels like a cringy Western lens to me。 The book has a weird obsession with portraying gross sex stuff and Japanese-woman-white-man relationships, and one of the stories is literally from the perspective of a guy who loves to drug women。The author mentions in his acknowledgements that he has a PhD, and I would like to now formally rescind this PhD for crimes against women and literature。 。。。more

Thoroughly enjoyed this collection of short stories。 Some parts were really quite moving and it was absorbing from start to finish。 There is a lot of creativity and originality, with mixed media (a comic, for example) and it takes some inspiration from Japanese folklore that adds a sense of mysticism。 Totally recommend。

Nick Bradley tells the tale of Tokyo; not seen through rose coloured specs or tourist eyes, but the raw, rough city。 Enthralled with a splash of fantasy, portrayed by a cat。 Not what I expected but nevertheless- thrilling。

3。5 closer to 3 than 4。 It is a lovely description of the different viewpoints of Tokyo from the lives touched by a cat with green eyes。 It is about family and how we are all linked in our lives by simple threads。 Easiest way to describe the book is about a family whose grandfather is a writer and the people his writing impacted as well as the story of his family and the cat。 There is a street person, lonely American who translates Japanese, a detective, and several other characters。 Lovely read 3。5 closer to 3 than 4。 It is a lovely description of the different viewpoints of Tokyo from the lives touched by a cat with green eyes。 It is about family and how we are all linked in our lives by simple threads。 Easiest way to describe the book is about a family whose grandfather is a writer and the people his writing impacted as well as the story of his family and the cat。 There is a street person, lonely American who translates Japanese, a detective, and several other characters。 Lovely read and something different。 。。。more

Unless it's the little calico cat we meet in every chapter ? Who knows。 Maybe it's juste « people », as a whole。 « It's a small world », they say。 Here, Tokyo's world seems small indeed, because if every chapter is about a different life, each of them is connected to at least one other, sometimes more。 One person at a time, a real web starts to weaves itself, connecting everybody in the book。 It's wonderfully done。And all those voices, what are they saying ? Little pieces of life。 Random encounters, sometimes happy, sometimes not。 Tragedies。 Little bits of hope。 The reading is not often cheerful, but never gloomy, closer to some sort of melancholy, seemingly tied to this place that, like a clock, never stops its course, insensitive to joys or sorrows。 But what is a single existence, lost amongst millions of others ?And that is the book's story。 Don't come here in search of a traditional novel ; however, it's definitely not a short stories compilation either ; without real beginnings or endings, it's most likely real slices of life which, together, make a whole, but could hardly exist by themselves。 We go through a character's intimate thoughs to someone else's, crossing the city over the seasons, leaving behind, not matter what, these temporary companions after a few pages, sometimes discovering what they become through another person's point of view, sometimes not。 We have to accept to never see again some of them, even if they really are likeable, but it's a relief to know some others are doing well。 Overall, despite the harshness of life, the book carries quite a positive vibe。 Probably the hope everything will finally get better someday。« The Cat and the City » is a journey。 Not only to Tokyo, but also and above all to the core of Humanity。 Was there a best tour guide for that than a cat ? 。。。more

Good, but not great。 I enjoyed the structure of the small narratives that all intertwined through the city of Tokyo with the heart of the tale being a cat (though not the central focus)。 I also enjoyed the different modes of narrative, from short, succinct chapters to the comic book style story of the hikikomori and the cat。 At times I was looking for a bit more of the atmospheric setting of Tokyo, and some of the characters were simply not likeable so I had less investment in their stories。 Ove Good, but not great。 I enjoyed the structure of the small narratives that all intertwined through the city of Tokyo with the heart of the tale being a cat (though not the central focus)。 I also enjoyed the different modes of narrative, from short, succinct chapters to the comic book style story of the hikikomori and the cat。 At times I was looking for a bit more of the atmospheric setting of Tokyo, and some of the characters were simply not likeable so I had less investment in their stories。 Overall, worth reading if you enjoy a more Westernized take on Japanese fiction。 。。。more
